Mixed nucleus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007326
An aerosol particle made of both water-soluble and insoluble material, such as a mineral grain coated with salt or sulfate. The soluble part takes up water vapor and promotes condensation, while the insoluble core can serve as the surface on which ice forms. Most atmospheric nuclei are thought to be of this mixed kind, so one particle may act as a condensation nucleus in some conditions and an ice nucleus in others.
