Pyrgeometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010695
An instrument designed to measure the downward longwave radiation emitted by the atmosphere. It typically consists of a thermopile sensor covered by a silicon dome that blocks solar radiation while allowing infrared radiation to pass through. The sensor's temperature difference from its housing is converted into a voltage signal, which is then correlated with the incident longwave radiation flux in watts per square meter.
