Scattering matrix

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008694

A mathematical construct, also known as the Mueller matrix, that relates the Stokes parameters of an incident beam of electromagnetic radiation to the Stokes parameters of the scattered beam. This 4x4 matrix fully describes how a particle or a collection of particles alters the intensity and polarization state of light upon scattering. Each of the 16 elements of the matrix contains information about the size, shape, and composition of the scattering particles, and it is used in applications like radar meteorology and remote sensing.
