Signal
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008869
The part of a time series of data that represents the true, systematic variation of a physical quantity, as distinct from random fluctuations or noise. In climate science, a signal is a long-term trend or a recurring pattern, such as the warming trend attributed to anthropogenic forcing or the cyclical pattern of El Niño. Statistical methods are used to separate the climate signal from the natural, short-term variability that constitutes noise.
