Spherical shell apparatus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009135
A laboratory device consisting of two concentric spheres with the space between them filled with fluid, used to simulate large-scale geophysical flows. The apparatus is mounted on a rotating table to model the effects of a planet's rotation, and heating or cooling can be applied to the inner and outer boundaries to drive convection. These experiments are used to study the dynamics of planetary atmospheres and oceans in a controlled setting.
