Thermal wind equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009597

A mathematical relationship that describes the vertical shear of the geostrophic wind in terms of the horizontal temperature gradient. It indicates that the geostrophic wind increases with height in the direction of warmer air. This equation is a fundamental tool for understanding the dynamics of atmospheric fronts and jet streams.
