Total conductivity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009710
The electrical conductivity of air, equal to the sum of the positive and negative polar conductivities, a quantity of atmospheric electricity that arises from small ions drifting in an electric field. It sets how fast the fair-weather electric field relaxes toward its equilibrium, and it increases with altitude as ion production by cosmic rays rises and aerosols that capture ions thin out. Near the ground it is of order 10 femtosiemens per meter.
