Alkaline flooding
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000094
An enhanced oil recovery method that involves injecting an alkaline solution, such as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, or sodium orthosilicate, into the reservoir. The alkaline agent reacts with acidic components in the crude oil to form natural surfactants, which reduce interfacial tension between oil and water. This process mobilizes residual oil that is trapped by capillary forces, increasing oil recovery by 5 to 20 percent of the original oil in place.
