Angle of approach

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000117

The angle at which a seismic ray path arrives at a detector or an interface, measured with respect to the vertical axis. This angle is a function of the source-receiver offset and the velocity of the subsurface layers through which the wave has traveled. Analysis of how seismic amplitude varies with the angle of approach (or angle of incidence) is a key technique for identifying fluid content and lithology.
