Band-limited function
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000270
A mathematical function whose Fourier transform is zero outside of a finite frequency interval or band. Seismic signals are treated as band-limited because both the source wavelet and the Earth's filtering effects restrict the energy to a specific range of frequencies. This property is a foundational concept in digital signal processing for seismic data, dictating sampling requirements according to the Nyquist theorem.
