Barite plug
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000275
A dense plug formed by pumping a slurry of barite in water or oil-based fluid, usually with a dispersant, so the particles settle out and pack into a hard, low-permeability mass at the target depth. It is used to control a kick combined with lost circulation, to isolate a zone temporarily, or as a base for a cement plug. Slurry density reaches about 20 pounds per gallon, and no cement is mixed into the slurry.
