Caliche

A hardened layer of calcium carbonate that forms in arid and semi-arid soils, typically near the surface, through the precipitation of dissolved carbonates. It can act as a natural cement, binding soil particles and rock fragments. Caliche layers can impede drilling operations and affect surface infrastructure.
