Carboxymethyl starch

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004255

A chemically modified, water-soluble polymer derived from starch, used as a fluid-loss control additive in drilling fluids. It forms a protective colloid on clay particles and plugs the pores of the filter cake, reducing the amount of filtrate lost to the formation. Unlike untreated starch, it resists bacterial degradation and is effective in a range of water salinities, performing well at temperatures up to about 120°C (250°F).
