A chemically modified starch, carboxymethyl starch, added to water-based muds to control filtration. It forms a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the borehole wall and cuts fluid loss to the formation, and it works in freshwater and brine systems. It holds up to roughly 120 degrees Celsius (250 degrees Fahrenheit), beyond which it degrades and other fluid-loss polymers are used.
