Cathode

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000589

The electrode in an electrochemical cell where reduction occurs, meaning it gains electrons. In the context of corrosion control for pipelines and structures, the cathode is the metallic surface that is being protected from corrosion. A cathodic protection system makes the entire structure the cathode of a corrosion cell by supplying it with electrons from an external anode.
