Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000137

The electrode of an electrochemical cell at which oxidation occurs and metal is lost, so corrosion on a drill string or casing takes place at its anodic areas. In cathodic protection, a sacrificial anode of zinc, aluminum, or magnesium is connected to the steel so that it corrodes instead of the steel. Electrons flow from the anode through the metal to the cathode, where reduction takes place.
