Charpy test
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000637
A standardized high strain-rate test that measures the energy a material absorbs during fracture, which indicates its notch toughness. A swinging pendulum strikes a notched specimen of a specified size, and the energy absorbed by the sample is calculated from the height the pendulum reaches after breaking it. This test determines a material's tendency to exhibit brittle versus ductile behavior, particularly for steel used in pipelines and pressure vessels at low temperatures.
