A cylindrical sample of rock or sediment retrieved from the wellbore, typically 2 to 4 inches in diameter and several feet long. It is obtained using a specialized core barrel and provides direct geological information about the subsurface formation. Cores are analyzed for porosity, permeability, and fluid content.
