Crystallization temperature

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000918

The temperature at which salt crystals first form as a completion or workover brine cools; it rises with salt concentration. High-density brines such as calcium bromide and zinc bromide solutions sit close to saturation, so cold seabed or surface temperatures can precipitate solids that plug lines and equipment. Brine blends are formulated so the crystallization temperature stays below the lowest temperature the fluid will meet, and the value is measured in the laboratory by cooling a sample until crystals appear.
