Dielectric constant
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001062
A dimensionless measure of how strongly a material polarizes in an electric field, equal to its permittivity divided by the permittivity of vacuum, so it is also called relative permittivity. In formation evaluation it separates water from other constituents, because water is near 80, oil about 2 to 2.5, gas about 1 and common rock minerals roughly 4 to 8. Dielectric tools exploit that contrast to estimate water-filled porosity even in fresh water or low-salinity formations.
