Dielectric resistivity
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001065
A formation property measured by high-frequency electromagnetic logging tools to determine water saturation, particularly in fresh or mixed-salinity water environments. These tools operate in the microwave frequency range (around 1 gigahertz) and measure the propagation time and attenuation of the electromagnetic wave, which relate to the formation's dielectric constant and conductivity. Unlike standard induction tools that struggle to differentiate resistive hydrocarbons from resistive fresh water, dielectric measurements respond primarily to water volume, providing a salinity-independent water saturation calculation.
