Extended reach drilling

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001356

  1. A drilling technique characterized by wells with a horizontal displacement that is substantially greater than their true vertical depth. This method enables operators to access hydrocarbon reservoirs located far from the surface drilling location, often beneath obstacles or from a single platform. It is measured by the ratio of horizontal displacement to true vertical depth, which can exceed 2:1 or even 3:1.

  2. A drilling technique where the horizontal section of a well significantly exceeds its vertical depth, allowing access to distant reservoirs from a single surface location. This method is particularly useful for developing offshore fields or reaching reserves under environmentally sensitive areas. Wells drilled using this technique can have horizontal sections measuring several kilometers.
