First reading

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001428

The lowest depth at which a logging tool string records usable data, fixed by how far its lowest sensor sits above the bottom of the string. Because of that offset the log stops short of the bottom of the hole by the same distance, so a sensor 15 feet above the bottom of the string, for example, leaves the last 15 feet of hole unlogged. Depth-control planning therefore quotes the first reading of each sensor, measured from the bottom of the tool.
