Gilsonite

A naturally occurring asphaltic hydrocarbon resin used as a drilling fluid additive to improve shale stability, reduce fluid loss, and provide lubrication. It is a solid, black, brittle material that melts at elevated temperatures, forming a pliable, impermeable barrier on the wellbore. Gilsonite is often added in concentrations ranging from 5 to 50 pounds per barrel.
