A leak-off test, a procedure conducted to determine the maximum pressure a formation can withstand before fracturing. Drilling fluid is pumped into the wellbore below the casing shoe, and the pressure is gradually increased until a deviation from linearity indicates the formation has begun to part. The leak-off pressure provides data for designing safe drilling mud weights and casing setting depths.
