Microporosity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002356

The fraction of a rock's volume composed of extremely small, sub-resolution pores, such as those found within clay particles or between fine silt grains. These pores hold water through capillary action, contributing to the rock's total porosity but not its effective porosity because the fluids are immobile. Microporosity is a cause of high irreducible water saturation in shaly sand reservoirs.
