A small-scale hydraulic fracturing treatment performed before the main stimulation to gather data on reservoir and fracture properties. A limited volume of fluid is pumped into the formation at a pressure high enough to create a small fracture, and the subsequent pressure decline is analyzed. This diagnostic fracture injection test (DFIT) provides data on formation closure pressure, fluid leakoff rate, and fluid efficiency, which are used to refine the design of the full-scale fracture treatment.
