Oxygen activation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002667

A pulsed-neutron logging technique that detects water flow by activating oxygen nuclei in the water. Fast neutrons convert oxygen-16 into nitrogen-16, which decays with a half-life of about 7 seconds and emits energetic gamma rays. Gamma detectors spaced along the tool time the arrival of the activated water, giving its velocity and direction, including flow in channels behind casing, and only water is sensed.
