Impulse activation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001952
An oxygen activation method for detecting water flow in which a neutron generator fires a short burst that converts oxygen in the water into short-lived nitrogen-16, and gamma-ray detectors then record the decaying activated slug as it moves past. The timing of the count-rate profile gives the water velocity and flow direction, inside or outside the casing. Nitrogen-16 has a half-life of about 7 seconds.
