Neutron activation log
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002531
A nuclear log in which a neutron source makes stable nuclei near the tool radioactive, and detectors then count the delayed gamma rays emitted as they decay. In production logging the best-known use activates oxygen in flowing water to detect and time its movement, inside the casing or behind it. The activated oxygen-16 turns into nitrogen-16, which has a half-life of about 7 seconds.
