Photon log
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002778
A log of the density of the material surrounding a completed well, recorded with a radioactive gamma-ray source and a detector on a nuclear fluid densimeter. Gamma photons from the source are scattered and absorbed by the surrounding material, so the count rate at the detector falls as density rises. It differs from a natural gamma ray log, which records radiation emitted by the rock itself.
