Point bar
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002834
A depositional feature made of sand and gravel that accumulates on the inside bend of a meandering river or stream channel. As water flows around a bend, its velocity decreases on the inside, causing sediment to be deposited in a crescent shape that builds out into the channel. Preserved in the rock record, ancient point bar deposits form well-sorted sandstone bodies that are excellent reservoir targets due to their high porosity and permeability.
