Primary reflection

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002936

A seismic reflection that has traveled directly from the source to a subsurface interface and then directly back to the receiver without any intermediate reflections at other interfaces. Primary reflections are the desired signals in seismic data, as they directly image the subsurface geological boundaries. They are distinguished from multiple reflections, which have more complex travel paths.
