Rarefaction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003047

A region in a propagating seismic wave where the particles of the medium are spread farther apart than their equilibrium positions, resulting in a decrease in density and pressure. This is the opposite of compression, where particles are pushed closer together. Rarefaction and compression cycles constitute the propagation of P-waves through the subsurface.
