Silicic acid
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003413
A weak acid formed when silicates react with water or when silicon dioxide dissolves in water. In drilling fluids, silicic acid can be an intermediate product in the formation of a protective silica layer on shale surfaces when silicate inhibitors are used. It contributes to the wellbore stabilization mechanism by polymerizing to form a gel or film.
