Space out

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004452

To adjust the vertical position of a tubing or drill string within the wellbore to align a specific component with a desired depth or surface reference point. This fine-tuning is accomplished by inserting or removing short sections of pipe, known as pup joints, of varying lengths into the string. Proper spacing out is required for correctly landing a tubing hanger in the wellhead or setting a downhole tool like a packer at a precise location.
