To measure the length of each individual joint of pipe, such as casing, tubing, or drill pipe, before it is run into the well. The measurements are recorded sequentially on a pipe tally sheet, which provides a cumulative length of the string as it is assembled. These precise measurements are used to calculate the exact depth of the string and any attached downhole equipment within the wellbore.
