Upset

The thickened section at the ends of drill pipe or tubing, created by forging the pipe wall to increase its cross-sectional area. This added thickness provides the extra material strength needed for cutting threads and withstanding the stresses of repeated connection makeup and breakout. The three types of upset are internal upset (IU), external upset (EU), and internal-external upset (IEU).
