Velocity layering
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004022
The stratification of subsurface materials into distinct layers, each characterized by a different seismic wave velocity. This vertical variation in velocity is a fundamental property of sedimentary basins and causes seismic waves to reflect and refract at the interfaces between layers. The velocity layering is a primary input for building the background velocity model used in seismic migration and depth conversion.
