Direct drive

Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000104

An extruder configuration on a fused filament fabrication (FFF) printer where the motor that pushes the filament is mounted directly on the print head. This setup provides precise control over filament retraction and flow, as the distance between the drive gear and the nozzle is very short. A direct drive system contrasts with a Bowden setup, where the extruder motor is mounted on the printer's frame and pushes filament through a long tube.
