Ageing of precipitate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000326
The process where a freshly formed precipitate is left in contact with its mother liquor, allowing for structural and morphological changes to occur over time. During this period, smaller, less stable crystals dissolve and redeposit onto larger, more perfect crystals in a process known as Ostwald ripening. This transformation results in a precipitate with increased particle size and purity, which is easier to filter and wash.
