Coprecipitation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002576

The simultaneous precipitation of a substance that would normally be soluble under the conditions of the experiment along with a desired insoluble precipitate. This process is a common source of contamination in gravimetric analysis and can occur through mechanisms like surface adsorption, occlusion within the crystal, or isomorphous replacement in the crystal lattice. Coprecipitation is distinct from postprecipitation, where the impurity deposits on the surface of the primary precipitate after its formation is complete.
