Amine oxides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000488
Compounds containing the group R3N+-O-, in which a nitrogen atom carries three hydrocarbon substituents and one oxygen atom. Each can be viewed as a tertiary amine that has added a single oxygen at nitrogen, as in trimethylamine N-oxide. The molecules are strongly polar, and the N-O linkage is a dative (coordinate covalent) bond rather than an ordinary covalent one.
