Phosphine oxides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008774
A class of organophosphorus compounds in which a phosphorus atom carries three organic groups and a terminal oxygen, written R3P=O, formed by oxidizing tertiary phosphines. They are polar and thermally stable, and they bind metals through oxygen. Triphenylphosphine oxide is the by-product of the Wittig reaction, and trioctylphosphine oxide serves as a metal-extraction agent and nanocrystal ligand.
