Annealing
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000623
A heat treatment that holds a solid polymer at one temperature, or on a changing profile, short of complete melting or dissolution, in order to improve its structure and properties. For a semicrystalline polymer it is carried out just below the melting point, which perfects existing crystallites, raises crystallinity and can convert them to more stable polymorphs. A glassy amorphous polymer is annealed slightly below its glass transition temperature to relieve internal stress.
