Mechanical melting

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007111

The reversible transition of a semicrystalline polymer from a solid state to a liquid-like state, induced by the application of mechanical shear forces rather than by an increase in temperature. This phenomenon occurs when the mechanical energy input is sufficient to disrupt the crystalline structures within the polymer, causing it to flow. The process is distinct from thermal melting, which is driven solely by heat.
