Solid-state polymerisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011004

A polymerization of a crystalline monomer carried out in the solid state, without melting or dissolving it, with initiation by heat, ultraviolet light or gamma rays. The result is either a semicrystalline polymer whose lattice differs from the monomer crystal or, in a topochemical reaction, one that follows the monomer lattice. In industry the name is also used for raising the molar mass of semicrystalline polyester chips, such as PET, by heating between the glass transition and melting temperatures.
