Precipitation polymerisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009353

A polymerization in which monomer, initiator and often a colloid stabilizer are dissolved in a solvent that does not dissolve the polymer once it passes a limiting molar mass, so the polymer separates as it forms. The new phase appears as growing particles or a precipitate. It differs from emulsion polymerization, where the monomer is dispersed as droplets and the polymer forms mainly in particles in the aqueous phase, not in the droplets.
