Antimitochondrial antibody

An autoantibody directed against components of the mitochondria, the organelles responsible for cellular energy production. These antibodies are frequently detected in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, an autoimmune disease affecting the liver. Their presence is a diagnostic marker for this condition, often appearing years before clinical symptoms manifest.
