Autoradiolysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001002

The decomposition of a chemical compound caused by the radiation emitted from its own radioactive atoms. As the radionuclide within a molecule undergoes radioactive decay, the emitted particles or photons interact with and break down the surrounding molecules of the same substance. This self-induced process is particularly relevant in the long-term storage of highly concentrated radiolabeled compounds, where it can lead to sample degradation.
